The Cleveland Guardians opened the 2024 ALDS with a commanding 7-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers at Progressive Field on October 5, 2024. A five-run first inning, highlighted by Lane Thomas’ three-run homer, set the tone early for Cleveland, leaving Detroit unable to recover.
Detroit’s starter, Tyler Holton, struggled from the outset, giving up three earned runs without recording an out. The Guardians capitalized on every opportunity, with José Ramírez and Josh Naylor each driving in runs before Thomas’s home run blew the game wide open. Reese Olson relieved Holton but still allowed a home run as Cleveland took full control. David Fry later added to the Tigers’ misery with a two-run double in the sixth inning.
Cleveland’s pitching staff was lights out. Led by Cade Smith, who struck out four in 1.1 innings, the Guardians’ bullpen combined to allow just four hits. Detroit’s hitters, including Spencer Torkelson and Kerry Carpenter, couldn’t mount a challenge, leaving five runners on base throughout the game.
With this win, the Guardians now lead the series 1-0 and are looking strong as they head into Game 2. For the Tigers, they’ll need to regroup quickly to avoid an early playoff exit after this tough defeat
