Ryan Wesley Routh pleaded not guilty to federal charges, including attempted assassination, after being arrested for camping outside Donald Trump’s golf course for 12 hours with a rifle. The incident occurred when a Secret Service agent spotted Routh’s rifle protruding through the golf course fence, ahead of where Trump was playing. The agent fired at Routh, who fled and was arrested in a neighboring county. No shots were fired by Routh, and Trump was not in his line of sight.
Routh left behind a rifle, scope, digital camera, food, and a backpack. Authorities found a handwritten note from months earlier where Routh detailed plans to kill Trump and offered $150,000 for someone to complete the assassination. The note was discovered in a box he had left with a witness.
This incident came two months after Trump was shot and wounded in a prior assassination attempt during a rally in Pennsylvania. Routh also faces charges related to illegally possessing a firearm, as he had multiple felony convictions. The case is being overseen by Judge Aileen Cannon, who was previously involved in Trump’s classified documents case.
